When the Tea Party was started several years ago by Ron Paul, it was slightly more Libertarian in its politics.
Dr. Paul, a principled member of the liberty movement made strong calls to action to audit the Fed, reduce Wall Street Bailouts, limit unilateral military action in foreign nations, as well as allow for more freedom in personal life.
The movement Paul started has changed, not necessarily for the worse, but it’s a bit different than what it used to be. This is made obvious by the candidate the largest Tea Party organization in the nation is voting to support.
IJ Review writes:
The largest Tea Party group in American, the Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund, has finally announced which candidate they are endorsing for president.
The group announced today that they are throwing their support behind Republican senator Ted Cruz.
“We seek a candidate who shares our values: personal freedom, economic freedom, and a debt-free future. On behalf of Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund and our supporters, I am proud to announce our endorsement for president of the United States: Senator Ted Cruz!”
Candidates had to go through a number of steps in order to be considered by the TPPCF. They had to fill out a questionnaire, sit down for an interview, submit themselves to opposition research, and then the TPPCF lets the voters decide in an “endorsement primary.”
The release also included quotes from Tea Party leaders across the country, such as Frank Racz from Fayetteville, North Carolina:
“I was asked a few weeks ago ‘what makes a great president?’ I want our next president to have clear, easily identifiable, conservative principles, which he has lived with for his entire life. I want our next president to be able to clearly communicate his principles to America. I want our next president to have an understanding of the ‘levers of government.’ He should demonstrate a history of creative, constitutional, and effective solutions that have furthered his principles; and I want to be assured that he will continue to do exactly what he said he would do. And finally, I want our next president’s actions and principles to be guided by a spiritual moral compass. I think that man is the man I voted for in this endorsement process; Senator Ted Cruz.”
According to the Conservative Review, members of Tea Party Patriots have pledged to vote for the candidate who received their endorsement.
This is not Cruz’s first big endorsement. He has the support of other major conservatives such as Iowa-based talk radio host Steve Deace.
When questioned about his conservatism, Ted Cruz consistently refers back to his long legacy of pro-constitutional endeavors.
But opponents mention his work for the Bush administration over a decade ago as well as his extensive Wall Street donor base don’t qualify him as a true conservatism.
Nonetheless, millions of conservatives like the idea of Cruz as President as evidenced by a solid voter turnout in the Iowa caucus.
What’s your opinion on this?
Do you support the endorsement? If not, what’s your reasoning?
