Is The E.U. Our Trade Enemy?

President Donald Trump while speaking to CBS recently stated he finds the European Union as a “foe” to the U.S. when it comes to trade.

Trump stated, “Well, I think we have a lot of foes. I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade. Now, you wouldn’t think of the European Union, but they’re a foe. Russia is a foe in certain respects. China is a foe economically. Certainly, they are a foe. But that doesn’t mean they are bad. It doesn’t mean anything. It means that they are competitive.”

“They want to do well, and we want to do well. And we’re starting to do well. You see what’s going on we have best unemployment numbers probably that we’ve ever had. Black unemployment is the lowest level in history — Hispanic unemployment the lowest level in history, Jeff. Women unemployment lowest in 66 years. Our numbers are great. Our GDP numbers are far greater than what they thought.”

Of course they are a foe economically. They have been more “protectionest” than the US for decades. They protect their agriculture, while they know they cannot compete. Too many people, not enough land. Government sunsidized and invested in industries perform at highly inefficient blue prints because of socialist subsidations…. and on and on. The President is right to seek parity. They have been applying tarriffs against US products for decades to protect their socialist ecomomies that are terribly inefficient as they do not have to (there’s that dirty word) “compete”.

They are a “foe” in the same way opposing football teams are “foes” at gametime. During the game, they are bitter enemies, but afterwards, they are drinking buddies. We are foes during negoiations for trade, afterwards, we drink to our mutual successes. The problem is that most of our presidents don’t understand that or have a clue what they are doing. Trump does understand and is doing something about it. The Europeans have understood and took advantage of us.
