Democrats Continue Brining Up Puerto Rico

New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is accusing the Trump administration of “neglect” and “inaction” which came after Hurricane Maria.

Ocasio-Cortez stated, “I think what happened in my family is what happened to thousands of Puerto Ricans. in the neglect and government inaction, there was so little response, so little connection, you don’t know whether a hospital lost power. My grandfather was in a medical facility and he had passed away in the middle of the night. The people who pass way in these storms are the most vulnerable. They are children with illnesses, elderly. When power is not restored, when infrastructure is not taken seriously, these are the first people who pass away in storms. What we saw in Puerto Rico was a mass death of 3,000 people. It was the worst humanitarian crisis in modern American history. Many, many people impacted by this storm point to government inaction as the cause of death.”

She continued, “First and foremost there is systemic issue here. That is the modern day colonial relationship that the United States has with Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans are technically American citizens but do not have the right to vote. They are treated in completely different ways as a normal American citizen. And for that reason you have the chronic neglect of the island. Acute situations like this in which Puerto Ricans continue to be treated like second-class citizens. Puerto Rico was given a fraction of the FEMA recovery as Houston, for example, in Hurricane Harvey. We have Hurricane Irma, Sandy. This is not just an issue of the colonial status of Puerto Rico but us of not addressing climate change either.”

OK sounds to me like corruption of officals in the country, mismanagement of goods sent to country. Also both parties took part in slowing up the money being sent. It is not just a single party causing the problems as she would have us to believe but the poltical maneuvering of both parties.

    • gvette

Have to give it to the uber liberals, they never stop in their endless quest to take every last dime we earn. Puerto Rico has had the ability to become a state, but have not been able to figure out what direction they want to go. I would like to see an all or nothing vote from them. Either become a state and fully conform to everything that entails, or take your independence and stand on your own. Many of us are sick of funneling money to the corrupt politicians and officials there.

My neighbor’s mother and sister and her family live in PR. After the hurricane I would often ask her how her family was doing and she said fine. Electric restored. Supplies reached them. She said the problem was with the poorer people who lived remotely, specifically in the mountains. They were told to evacuate down and refused. Their “houses” were tin hovels and the electric grid was already sporadic before the hurricanes. When are people going to assign responsibility to the people and not to the government for every wrong decision individuals make?

  • Joe Gajewski

Thousands of cases of water still sitting at the distribution center. Residents said it didn’t taste good. That’s because they’re used to drinking sewer water. If you go through San Jaun past all the casinos and hotels, you find hundreds of tin shacks with no utilities. Why expect FEMA and the Fed Gov to come in and give you what you never had before? The government of PR is to blame, not the US. They need to get off their asses and fix something instead of crying about it.

  • Gary Duffy

Members of the Congress and the Senate have had debt relief for Puerto Rico on their agenda for a number of years before President Trump was even elected to office. Both parts of the legislative branch knew that the politicos running Puerto Rico were corrupt and did absolutely nothing to help out the people of Puerto Rico long before Hurricane Maria. There is no doubt that relief efforts after all natural disasters occurring within the United States and outside have not been handled adequately by FEMA and the federal government. If there is such suffering still going on in Puerto Rico, then why doesn’t the legislative branch do something about enacting some relief instead attempting to throw rocks at the present administration and the opposite political party. Come to think of it why don’t the citizens of Puerto Rico have a right to vote and be represented within the Government?? Stop complaining and get your fact finding butts down there and investigate where all the relief provided thus far has not gotten to the citizens of Puerto Rico. It is part of your job as the legislative branch to oversee the spending of American tax dollars. Oh I forgot that since Puerto Ricans cannot vote then there is nothing in it for you.

    • rdells

      Great input, Gary

  • rdells

    Well “Duh”.

  • mikeshepard1954

FBI is investigating numerous Puerto Rican government officials for “mishandling or not properly distributing FEMA supplies after receiving calls from Puerto Rico residents.
The Governor has called for the investigation of the island’s electric utility company for warehousing huge quantities of electric materials designated for hurricane relief. The Army Corp of Engineers seized the materials and had to take over rebuild of power grid.
