The first prototypes of President Donald Trump’s massive border wall are going up in the San Diego area, and illegal immigrants are already being caught in the construction zone.
Several immigration officials spoke to The Washington Examiner and explained that they apprehended illegal immigrants trying to sneak into the United States in the same area where eight border wall prototypes are being erected.
“There have been arrests made where individuals crossed illegally into the United States,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection San Diego division chief Mario Villarreal told the Examiner.
“We’ve had additional resources there in the form of our horse control and ATVs,” Villarreal said.
Trump has called for a border wall ever since the beginning of his presidential campaign. He ran on the promise to curb illegal immigration by blocking easy access to the United States.
While the country already has some parts of the border walled off, its effectiveness is limited. In fact, the current barrier, constructed with steel and mesh, makes for easy access for illegal immigration.
How long does it take illegal aliens to cut through the current barrier? “It takes less than a minute,” U.S. Border Patrol agent Eduardo Olmos said. “We had one to two cuts a day last year, and about 500 total.”
Those disturbing statistics are something Trump hopes to change.
According to WLWT-TV, the proposed border wall will be constructed with metal and concrete, stand 30 feet tall, and will have sharp edges on the top.
Trump has specifically called for the border wall to be erected in the places where the illegal immigrants are most likely to cross. One of the busiest crossings is in San Diego.
If even the prototypes are proving effective, there’s no question a fully funded border wall will be a huge improvement in blocking illegal immigration.
